Mapping student engagement in a massive open online course (MOOC)

چکیده
The massive open online course (MOOC) has appeared as an alternative form of distance instruction designed to scale to global audiences. Although a fair amount is known regarding who takes MOOCs, we know much less about the geography of MOOC student engagement beyond survey results that summarize students’ home countries. This paper characterizes spatial patterns of learner engagement in MOOCs by mapping students' locations, attributes, and learning behaviors from a cartography MOOC offered by Penn State University titled Maps and the Geospatial Revolution. We associate course participation statistics with student locations (geocoded using IP addresses) and summarize the results using choropleth maps featuring hexagonal bins. The resulting maps show rural and urban differences in participation across countries and continents at a level of granularity not previously depicted in the MOOC literature. Themes we explore include course enrollment, course completion, engagement with course forums, gender distribution, and percentage of students "dropping out" of the course after the first exam. These findings can help online educators to better understand student behaviors in massive, global courses.

متن کاملLearning Latent Engagement Patterns of Students in Online Courses
Maintaining and cultivating student engagement is critical for learning. Understanding factors affecting student engagement will help in designing better courses and improving student retention. The large number of participants in massive open online courses (MOOCs) and data collected from their interaction with the MOOC open up avenues for studying student engagement at scale. In this work, we...
متن کاملThe Impact of Small Learning Group Composition on Student Engagement and Success in a MOOC
A commonly known and widely studied problem of massive open online courses (MOOCs) is the high drop-out rate of students. In this paper we propose and analyze the composition of small learning groups as a solution to this problem. In an experiment, we composed such small learning groups in a MOOC context using two methods: Random grouping and grouping by an algorithm that considers selected stu...
متن کاملWho negatively influences me? Formalizing diffusion dynamics of negative exposure leading to student attrition in MOOCs
In this work, we explain the underlying interaction mechanisms which govern students’ influence on each other in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Specifically, we outline different ways in which students can be negatively exposed to their peers on MOOC forums and discuss a simple formulation of learning network diffusion, which formalizes the essence of how such an influence spreads and can...
